"The Traveling Wise Men", a new Christmas adventure by Chelsea Wojcik
This is our first series of posts interviewing creative authors and mompreneurs. We all have gifts and talents that can be expressed well if we have a voice. Most of us are moms who try to balance our days between children and work. Most of us have decided to start a journey of having our own home-business. With this it is important for people to know what we offer. I believe in the power of community over competition. That’s what inspired me to do this series.
This is Chelsea Wojcik , author of the book “The Traveling Wise Men, A Christmas ADVENTure.” This is great book that teaches children and adults how to rediscover the real meaning of CHRISTmas.
We had the pleasure of interviewing the author, Chelsea Wojcik, and the creative illustrator, Vonnie Coleman. They are a mother-daughter-team! Enjoy the interview:
1.WHAT’S THE BOOK ABOUT?
This book is based on the Bible story of Jesus’s birth. It starts with the angel visiting Mary and Joseph, then it goes into the miracle of the birth of Christ. As the story continues, the Wise Men are introduced. The story explains the reason for the Wise Mens travels and uses beautiful imagery to show the journey they endured. At the end of the story, readers are invited to use their own nativity sets to make the story come to life in their own homes.
The Traveling Wise Men can be used in any way the family sees fit. Families can hide their wise men, they can move them closer to the nativity, or they can have sneaky wise men. Some people name their wise men, some don’t, or some even use the biblical names. Some ADVENTures last til Christmas Day, some go until Three Kings Day. It is entirely up the each family. That is the beauty, it can be made to fit what you want!
This tradition is a Christian version of the elf on the shelf.
2. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE IT?
My kids are my inspiration! I wanted the holidays, specifically Christmas to be focused around Jesus Christ. In our family Santa is not an option, we deeply believe that making Santa the center of our season would be a mistake. That thought is what led our family to use the bible story of Jesus and the nativity set as an instructional tool, which then led us to the story book itself! We did not want to create a fictional character, we wanted to keep it simple for families.
I wanted the wonder of Christmas to come from the bible story and the magic it possesses! The birth of Christ was a true miracle and that is what I wanted to stress to my children.
3. HOW HAS THE EXPERIENCE BEEN OF DOING THIS WITH YOUR OWN KIDS?
My kids love the tradition, they love the entire advent season! They enjoy advent scripture, wise men shenanigans, our calendar chocolate, and eating BIRTHDAY CAKE for Christmas breakfast! They know The Traveling Wise Men is just a fun game, but they know the real story from the bible which I consider a win for the season!
On Christmas morning, we celebrate the King of Kings Birthday. My kids really identify with the birthday idea because they themselves have birthdays and attend birthday parties. We decorate our table like a real birthday, banner cake and all! We sing the birthday song and enjoy cake for breakfast! I assure you it’s much easier than making a giant Christmas morning buffet!
4.HOW LONG DID THE WRITING PROCESS TAKE?
The book itself took a solid year to come together. We started with the storyboard. From that point I started compiling the rhyme of the story from the script in Matthew (bible). Then, my mom, Vonnie, took over the illustration process. This took 6 months to create. The prerequisites were very specific to:
A timeless audience, the book needed to be interesting for children and adults, we didn’t want a cartooning story, we wanted a beautiful historical representation.
The main characters, Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the Wise Men should remain faceless, because we wanted every reader to look at those illustrations and be able visualize their own nativity sets. We intentionally use silhouettes for every character for this purpose.
We also really wanted to incorporate the thematic use of the chalkboard.
After the first year, many edits were made to bring the current day events into the scene.
As a funny remark of the the process, there was 17 drafts just for the cover, says Vonnie.
The book was first released by Nov 2012.
5. WHO HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SUPPORTER ON THIS ADVENTURE?
The creation of this book is a family endeavor but my husband was my biggest supporter. He is the one who believes in me the most and has always helped me to brainstorm new ideas. He keeps me from obsessing over things that really are not that important. But I truly can not forget the love and direction that my savior, Jesus, has given me through this writing process. To Him be the glory!
6. WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WANT YOUR READERS- ESPECIALLY KIDS- TO LEARN FROM IT?
Jesus is the reason for the season. I want people to know that we celebrate Christmas because He was born, He lived, and He died on the cross so we can be saved!
7. DO YOU THINK YOU’ll WRITE A SECOND BOOK? WHY? WHY NOT?
(laugh)people often ask me this! The truth is that growing up I didn’t aspire to be an author, when I was a little girl I just wanted to be a teacher. I think my true gifts are with teaching but it falls naturally into the book writing for children. Maybe in the future I will write a book to instruct children on holy matters, but it would have to be God’s inspiration just like He did with this one.
8. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE MOMS WHO ARE ALSO CREATIVES LIKE YOU AND ARE HOLDING BACK PROJECTS OR BUSINESS IDEAS FOR EITHER FEAR OR LACK OF SUPPORT?
The first thing I would do is encourage others to pray and listen to what God has to tell you. Are you doing this motivated by performance, or others, or comparison? God has given us all gifts and talents and a desire to use them so ask HIM for direction first! After moms have searched their hearts I would encourage them to leap, if that is what God whispers. Next, grace, grace, and more grace! In order to be a mom and anything else we need to extend ourselves abundant amounts of grace. We can’t do everything. When you have a business it is important that your first job of being a mom should always come first! Timelines will be stretched, naptimes will be utilized, you will have to work after bedtime, but at the end, think of the legacy you are leaving your children! Being a mom is one of my most treasured job position and I pray it always remains a priority!
